Franco Matticchio.
Lazy Dog Press.

The faces of Franco Matticchio’s women are serious and enigmatic.
He draws them instinctively onto any paper surface he comes across,
be it an envelope or the pages of a book or even «The New Yorker».

These are faces he encounters along the street, at the station, ones that he observes in his everyday life and which accumulate and overlap in his own personal visual imagination. Matticchio’s attention is captured by women with a non-glamourous beauty, yet ones who stern expressions share a certain intensity and pride in their gaze. The illustrator continues over the years to return to this boundless subject using various media: crayons, watercolors, acrylics or simply a pen and ink or a pencil, always placing his figures against neutral backgrounds or in bare settings, bereft of time references, and through this subtraction managing to hone a sense of intimacy in these scenes, and create suspended and rarified atmospheres.

Over time, Matticchio has put together an outright collection of female faces, almost never commissioned and most of which previously unpublished. Hence this is a remarkable corpus of drawings in which we come across the illustrator’s unmistakable style; however, at the same time, it is hard for us to recognize that surreal and ironic vein which is one of his most characteristic hallmarks. Indeed, when Matticchio finds himself drawing a woman’s face, he does so solely as an observer, fascinated and enthralled by the depth and mysterious complexity of the female soul.
